Fond Farewell to Mary's Tamales

Mary’s Tamales (at 1931 E. Magnolia Ave.), which has been the subject of articles in these pages, has closed for good. The Mary of the shop’s namesake died years ago, but her cheerful, hospitable sister Clara Robinson ran it by herself for as long as we’ve been regulars, under the watchful painting of her sister Mary. Clara proved herself adaptable, surprising us in recent years with a vegetarian option. But the last time we dropped in on Clara, she said she was getting tired and might close soon, and she did. However some good news may follow. When we dropped in this week, the place was actively being renovated as the Palavah Hut, which is to feature “takeout cuisine from Liberia.” They’re looking at a December opening date.
