Most of us don’t think of music as a contest. Then again, most of us aren’t Patrick Mangan, the New York fiddle firebrand and Riverdance soloist who’s performing at Morelock Music on Gay Street this weekend. Mangan is a two-time All-Ireland fiddle champion and a direct artistic descendent of early 20th-century Irish-American fiddler Michael Coleman, whose elaborate, bouncy, and technically demanding Sligo style has been the blueprint for what most Americans think of as Irish fiddle music.
Mangan’s been a member of the touring Riverdance group since he was 16. For his Knoxville show, set for Friday, Sept. 17, at 8 p.m., Mangan will be joined by his frequent partner and fellow New Yorker Ryan McGiver, a noted Irish folk guitarist. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted.
