House Speaker Kent Williams, running as an independent, has been leading his Republican opponent Jerome Cochran throughout the race though the race was thought to be tightening up in recent weeks. Williams poured it on the last two weeks with additional mailers, advertising and a stepped up door-to-door campaign. Williams, who was kicked out of the Republican Party for voting for himself as speaker instead of the caucus nominee, wanted to make a statement with his victory.
He got over 60 percent of the vote to defeat Cochran. Williams said it was the first time a Republican had lost a legislative race in Carter County.
