Best Record Store: The Disc Exchange

Runners Up: Hot Horse, Lost & Found Records, McKay Used Books, CDs, Movies & More

Things looked uncertain for the Disc Exchange back in 2008, when its West Knoxville outpost closed its doors and was forced to consolidate its inventory with the store’s Chapman Highway location. But even with its downsizing, this staple of the Knoxville music community has come a long way since its start as a small section of rented counter space in a local pawn shop. In addition to stocking more than 100,000 new and used titles on their sprawling South Knoxville sales floor, the independently owned and operated institution has hosted numerous bands and celebrities, including Wilco and Gillian Welch. Plus, the store just recently began featuring a live broadcast of WFIV’s local music program, Homegrown, every Wednesday evening. But perhaps the best part of the Disc Exchange experience, besides the mouth-watering vinyl selection, is the knowledgeable and friendly staff who always seem to know the perfect recommendation, whether it be for your 12-year-old Taylor Swift-loving niece, or Phish-fanatic older brother.
