Alabama Nominee Could Lift Anonymous Hold on TVA Board Appointments

You may have read that President Obama’s nominees to the TVA board have been stalled by an anonymous hold by a senator, even though all of them passed a confirmation hearing earlier this year. The president nominated Barbara Haskew, Marilyn Brown, and Neil McBride. He also reappointed current board member Bill Sansom in order to avoid a “hold” by Tennessee’s Republican senators.

So what’s the holdup? We don’t want to go out on a limb here, but Howard Thrailkill, the only board member ever from Alabama, had his appointment expire in May. Alabama had long protested the lack of an Alabama member of the board until Thrailkill’s appointment. We suspect if the president reappoints Thrailkill or another Alabaman favored by U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., the hold will miraculously disappear.
