It’s been more than two years since Hudson K released its self-titled EP. The group—pianist/vocalist Christina Horn, drummer Nathan Barrett, and guitarist Jeff Christmas, along with a rotating cast of auxiliary members—is finishing up work on Shine, its first full-length album, which should be released before spring. Horn discusses the music she’s been listening to as they wrap up recording.
St. Vincent, Actor (4AD, 2009)
I saw St. Vincent open up for Andrew Bird last year and didn’t think I’d like it. But I was surprised, so I bought the record, and again, I was surprised. She’s much grittier and heavier than I expected. I really like the contrast of the orchestral arrangements and the addition of noise.
My Brightest Diamond, A Thousand Shark’s Teeth (Asthmatic Kitty, 2008)
Another Big Ears artist. I saw her play the Square Room—it was actually the first show there—and I was blown away by her performance there. I really like her voice—she’s an opera singer who’s transferred to this world of music. I like music that takes me to another place or time, that’s a little dreamy. The lyrics are abstract; they’re not really the focus. There are a lot of strings and sound effects that suck me in pretty easily.
Pearl and the Beard, God Bless Your Weary Soul, Amanda Richardson (Family Records, 2009)
We played with them at Pilot Light. I’m always intrigued by the bands Jason gets to come there. I’d never heard of them before, but Jason contacted us to play a show with them. They’re a cello/glockenspiel/guitar trio, kind of folky but poppy, too.
Silversun Pickups, Swoon (Dangerbird, 2009)
I saw them at Voodoo Fest in New Orleans when I played there with Erick Baker. I’d never heard of them. It must have been the mood. We were all dressed for summer and the temperature dropped 50 degrees and it started raining.
