It’s heartwarming when a local boy makes good, making his debut on national television.
David Letterman, on his late-night television show, ran a compilation of clips of local news anchors trying to pronounce the Christmas Day airline bomber’s name. It’s Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, in case you’ve forgotten. Yes, it included WBIR news anchor John Becker.
Becker explains that the Arab-speaking staff at WBIR happened to be off for Christmas vacation and he was left without a clue. Seems the NBC staff that provides phonetic pronunciations for difficult foreign names was also short-staffed. Most of them seem to be preoccupied with tracking Santa Claus on the radar.
Becker said friends from around the nation have been lighting him up, from Boston to San Francisco, via e-mail and tweets.
