Former state Sen. Bill Owen, D-Knoxville, was thrilled to get an invitation to meet with President Obama and rented an SUV to drive to Washington. But the day before the event Owen was disinvited.
Owen, a Democratic National Committee delegate, told The Washington Post he arrived in town the day before the fund-raising event at the Capitol Hilton, but got a call saying he could not attend because he is a lobbyist. Owen represents Lincoln Memorial University, ORNL, and Jewelry Television.
“I’m not a high-paid super lobbyist. I’m just a poor schmuck out here in Knoxville trying to make a living,” Owen told the Post.
