Give ’Em Shelter: Haiti Tent Drive

Both the Bearden and Farragut locations of Blue Ridge Mountain Sports are collecting tents and tarps for the survivors of the Jan. 12 earthquake that devastated Haiti. “Our customer base of outdoor enthusiasts has a fundamental understanding of the need for shelter in the open, plus they probably have these in their closets, so who better to ask?” says Knoxville market manager Ryan Baxter. The store is working with the non-profit relief agency Convoy of Hope, and requests old tents that have all parts and are in good condition and new tarps. Those who donate will receive 20 percent off a new tent or tarp, and the stores will be collecting at least through April 1. “We’ll probably take the signs down in a few weeks, but Convoy of Hope is always doing relief work, not just in Haiti, so we don’t want anyone to be discouraged from donating because of a date that’s past on the calendar,” says Baxter.
