Not much happening on the local government front this week, but City Council is supposed to hold a regular meeting at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 28, in the Main Assembly Room of the City County Building. The agenda won’t be available until Friday, but one issue likely to come up is some discussion of the process for selecting an acting mayor after Gov.-elect Bill Haslam departs the city next month.
Haslam has announced that he will resign on Jan. 10, ahead of assuming his gubernatorial duties on Jan. 15. Council plans to hold a special meeting that day to name one of its own members to fill out the remainder of Haslam’s term. The next mayor will take office in December, after a primary in September and (if needed) a run-off at the general election in November. At next Tuesday’s meeting, Council members are likely to make sure everybody understands how all that is going to work.
Vice-Mayor Bob Becker is also resigning next month, to move to Virginia, where the rest of his family has relocated. His 5th District Council seat will be filled at a later date by a Council appointment.
