“The Last Train to Knoxville” [Secret History by Jack Neely, Aug. 19, 2010], was significant as it marked the end of regular passenger train service from Knoxville. Perhaps the irony is that while passenger services ceased over 35 years ago, the former Southern Railway and Louisville and Nashville Railroad passenger stations have continued to stand. Both have notable architectural and historical value to the community and can hopefully be redeveloped to other uses. While passenger trains as a transportation option have slipped away, Norfolk Southern and CSX’s highly profitable freight service continues to criss-cross the area.
