When state Sen. Tim Burchett becomes County Mayor Tim Burchett his senate seat will be vacated until next session, beginning in January. It will be up to Knox County Commission to appoint someone to fill the seat, taking care of the office and constituent services until that time.
Commissioners are being lobbied to appoint Steve Hill as the interim senator. Hill finished third in the Republican primary for the permanent job, behind Rep. Stacey Campfield and Ron Leadbetter. Hill spent a long time doing government relations for the hospital formerly known as St. Mary’s and knows all the legislators, staff, and where their offices are.
Hill is retired, and because of his age would be unlikely to use the position to run for the office in four years. The decision will likely surface at the September County Commission meeting when the new Commission and Burchett take office.
