Ben Sollee Gets Stuck in Sweden and Misses Rhythm N' Blooms

The beer at the Bijou Theatre wasn’t the only snag for the first year of the Rhythm N’ Blooms festival. Headliner Ben Sollee, whom we profiled last week, got stuck in Sweden over the weekend, unable to travel back to the U.S. because of the ash cloud from the volcano eruption in Iceland. The cellist/singer/songwriter landed in Stockholm on April 13 and announced on Sunday morning via Twitter that he’d be stranded there for a week. He was scheduled to play two sets in Knoxville that day—an afternoon performance at Remedy Coffee in the Old City and a festival-closing show at the Knoxville Botanical Garden that night. The Black Lillies and Carrie Rodriguez extended their sets in Sollee’s absence.

Rhythm N’ Blooms organizer Chyna Brackeen says she’s working on bringing Sollee back to Knoxville later this year for a makeup performance.

“Nothing’s confirmed yet,” she says. “We’ll let passholders know first, and they’ll have priority access to the show.”

As for the rest of the weekend, Brackeen’s satisfied with the turnout and the logistics of Rhythm N’ Blooms. “It went really smoothly,” she says. “It was great for a first-year festival. All the artists were thrilled and had a great time.”
