Knox Chamber Mistakes Nicely for Superintendent Bill Sponsor

The Knoxville Chamber recently took the unusual step of castigating state Rep. Frank Niceley, R-Strawberry Plains, for several bills they deemed “hostile to business.” They did not criticize senate sponsor state Sen. Tim Burchett, R-Knoxville, because they said the bills were the “brainchild” of Niceley.

One of the bills listed would allow counties to return to an elected school superintendent if voters approve in a referendum. When the bill came up and passed an education subcommittee last week, it turned out the bill was sponsored by state Rep. Dennis Ferguson, D-Kingston. Niceley is not a sponsor of the bill.

Niceley did not argue with the Chamber’s accusation because he has long advocated for elected superintendents. Note to Chamber: Bills, with sponsors listed, are on the General Assembly’s website.
