A memory walk this past Monday kicked off YWCA Knoxville’s observance of the national YWCA’s Week Without Violence. Events still to come include a community leaders panel on domestic violence at the YWCA on the corner of Clinch and Walnut, and a lecture on elder abuse at the YWCA Phyllis Wheatley Center, both at noon Oct. 21; a community discussion group Oct. 22 at noon, and a self-defense workshop 9 a.m.-12 noon Oct. 24, both at the YMCA. These are just a few of the local statistics that are at issue:
Domestic Violence Knoxville 2008
• The Knoxville Police Department and the Knox County Sheriff’s Office responded to 16,400 domestic violence calls.
• Two murders in Knox County were related to domestic violence.
• There were a total of 1,620 reports of domestic violence-related crimes in Knox County ranging from stalking to incest to assault; 1,312 people reported were arrested and entered the justice system.
• The YWCA Victim Advocacy Program assisted more then 12,000 victims of domestic violence.
