Railroad workers at Norfolk Southern are not thrilled about the construction of an intermodal facility in New Market. They believe Norfolk Southern will close the John Sevier Yards off Rutledge Pike in Knoxville and move any remaining switch work to Chattanooga.
Should the John Sevier Yard close, it means a loss of union jobs in Knox County. The New Market site is expected to be contracted out to non-union operators. When Norfolk Southern moved from the Coster Shop off I-275, Knoxville was left with a Superfund site. The John Sevier Yards are expected to be worse.
