City Council candidate Brenda Palmer has been active in local Democratic politics and past races may prevent her receiving universal support. Gerry Holman, her opponent in the Third District, has received support from County Commissioner Amy Broyles, a Democrat. Broyles noted on the Old North Knox listserve that she is supporting Holman, Ken Knight, and Ray Abbas.
Don Daugherty, the former chair of the Knox County Democratic Party, has circulated a memo to a Democratic list, chastising Broyles for not supporting Palmer, whom he calls a Democrat with a chance to win. Daugherty calls on all “yellow dog” Democrats to vote for Democrats in local elections.
City Council races are allegedly non-partisan, but party affiliation still matters. Palmer needs support from Democrats in North Knoxville (Broyles’ district) in the citywide general election.
