On a recent Knoxville television appearance, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mike McWherter said he was a small businessman (beer distributor) and acknowledged that he is also a lawyer—but asked voters not to hold it against him. Chuckle, chuckle.
Might have been a bad move in Knoxville, where the local bar is about the only reliable base of political contributors for Democrats. The lawyers have since held a fund-raiser led by political heavyweight Sid Gilreath—a fund-raiser for state Sen. Roy Herron. Herron is also an attorney.
