Our Oct. 15 cover story by Jack Neely about the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, “Beyond the Baton,” characterized the Society of St. Francis, of which one KSO musician is a member, as a “strict Episcopal sect.” That member, who prefers not to be named, informs us that the international religious community entails a careful discipline of self-denial and simplicity in living, in devotion to the example of St. Francis, but is inclusive among Episcopalians. He calls it a “service organization.” For more information, he suggests the website tssf.org. The word “sect” has several meanings, some straightforward, but the word is often used pejoratively. We intended no criticism.
