Zim Ngqawana, a South African composer, bandleader, and multi-insrumentalist who served as an artist-in-residence at the University of Tennessee School of Music’s in 2004, has won the South African equivalent of a Grammy for his 2008 album Zimology in Concert. The disc, which won for Best Traditional Jazz Album, was recorded at UT during Ngqawana’s residency and during a 2005 concert on campus. The album features Ngqawana on saxophone, flute, harmonica, vocals, bicycle horn, antlers, bells, and more, with contributions from several UT faculty members: guitarist Mark Boling, drummer Keith Brown, bassist Rusty Holloway, and pianists Donald Brown and Ben Dockery. Mischa Goldman, a bass student at UT, engineered the record.
