You knew it was coming. First-generation hip-hop groups are now touring the county fair circuit, as demonstrated by the news that the Sugar Hill Gang is coming to the Tennessee Valley Fair in September, alongside Rick Springfield and Molly Hatchet. Whether it’s more evidence of hip-hop’s long-established place in mainstream pop culture, indication of the form’s maturity, or a sign of the apocalypse is up to you.
The Sugar Hill Gang had the first Top 40 rap hit with “Rapper’s Delight” in 1979.
