It’s been more than a decade since Fastball’s hit single, “The Way,” defined the summer of 1998. The Austin, Texas, trio has remained active all that time, and they’ve just released their fifth album, Little White Lies. Bassist/singer Tony Scalzo stopped at a truck stop somewhere in Pennsylvania last week to discuss what he’s been listening to in the van.
X, “Riding With Mary” from Under the Big Black Sun (Elektra, 1982)
That’s my favorite X record. It’s the second-to-last with Billy Zoom. They were a seasoned rock ’n’ roll band by that time. They still had an edge, but it hasn’t turned into Americana yet. It’s got more big-time sounds.
Those Bastard Souls, Debt and Departure (V2, 1999)
One of my favorite records. They were from Memphis and Boston, former members of the Grifters and the Dambuilders.
Bob Dylan
I’ve been listening to a lot of Bob Dylan, the stuff he’s done since ’98 or so, from Time Out of Mind. I haven’t gotten the new one, because I haven’t got my computer, so I haven’t been able to buy it on the Internet. I like it because it seems to be more normal. I can relate to him more. He’s not so abstract in his lyrics. I can understand what he’s saying.
Thelonious Monk, Monk Alone: The Complete Solo Studio Recordings 1962-1968 (Sony, 1998)
Killer, killer. I can sit and listen to that for an hour and a half.
