Insiders think Doug Horne will likely make a decision within the next week not to pursue a race for governor. Horne was seen as a deep-pocket possibility for a Democratic candidacy against a large Republican field that includes Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam.
Horne has family and business obligations, friends say, and he is also heavily involved in the budget and administrative problems at the University of Tennessee. Horne is a UT grad who serves on the Board of Trustees.
With the pass taken by Congressman Lincoln Davis, the party is without a high-profile candidate. Former state Rep. Kim McMillan is running, as is Nashville millionaire and unknown businessman Ward Camack.
