Knoxville Council Races Start

Ray Abbas announced this week that he is running for the 4th District City Council seat being vacated by the term-limited Rob Frost. Abbas previously ran against Joe Bailey for an at-large seat in a low turnout (5,538 votes) election.

Abbas may have a better base in the 4th District than he did in a city-wide race. He is on the board of directors for Old North Knox. He is the president of the Love Kitchen.

Ken Knight, manager of the Crowne Plaza, is running for the 2nd District seat being vacated by Barbara Pelot. Nick Pavlis, a former council member, is running from South Knoxville for the seat being vacated by Joe Hultquist.

In your current "Ear to the Ground": "Ken Knight, manager of the Crowne Plaza, is running for the northwest seat being vacated by Steve Hall." According to the City of Knoxville website, Steve Hall is from the Third District.

In the March 14 Knoxville News Sentinel:
"Ken Knight, general manager of the downtown Crowne Plaza Knoxville, is making another bid for City Council's 2nd District seat this year.

The hotel manager has stayed active in neighborhood and community organizations, as well as city public meetings, since his 2005 campaign for the same seat. Knight garnered 48.5 percent of the vote in the citywide general election in his attempt to unseat incumbent Barbara Pelot. Pelot is now term limited."
