Gun Carriers May Get More Freedom

Everybody wants to sponsor a gun bill this year, so a comprehensive bill to expand where permit holders can carry has been broken up into its various parts, the better to feature on campaign brochures.

State Rep. Harry Tindell, D-Knoxville, has a bill that allows permit holders to carry in municipal parks—but it has to be approved by the local city council. We’re sure Knoxville City Council will appreciate it when this hot potato hits the agenda. The bill also allows carrying in national parks. The park service has said it follows state law in such matters, thus the enabling legislation.

State Rep. Curry Todd, R-Collierville, has a bill that allows permit holders to carry guns into restaurants that serve alcohol, as long as the permit holder doesn’t drink.

State Rep. Mike Bell, R-Riceville, has a bill that allows carrying in wildlife management areas and national forests.

State Rep. Frank Niceley, R-Strawberry Plains, has a bill allowing permit holders to “pack” in state parks.

The Senate has designated state Sen. Mike Faulk, R-Rogersville, to head a special committee to handle all the gun legislation expected to arrive from the House this session.
