Gubernatorial candidates Bill Haslam and Zach Wamp were in voter-rich Shelby County last weekend attending the annual Lincoln Day dinner. Meanwhile, Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey was being hailed as a hero at the Jefferson County Lincoln Day dinner, visiting along with Almost House Speaker Jason Mumpower and state Republican Party Chair Robin Smith.
Smith is expected to run for Wamp’s congressional seat, and Jefferson County is in the district, but she refrained from making an announcement. The three were restrained in criticizing House Speaker Kent Williams, who got elected speaker with 49 Democratic votes and his own, edging out Mumpower. Smith threw Williams out of the Republican Party.
Local chair Hobart Rice was not quite so restrained, offering Mumpower gifts from the local party: a rail suitable for riding and tar and feathers.
