Figures released from a joint venture between Knox County Schools and the Knox County Health Department show a startling percentage of Knox County schoolchildren—nearly 40 percent—are overweight and/or obese (according to Body Mass Index measured in a sample population at school). In general, these numbers did not change from the three years the study was conducted: 38.3 percent in 2003, 39.3 percent in 2006, 39.6 in 2008.
For the youngest group sampled, though, the system’s four-year-olds’ overweight and obesity rates are high, and climbing higher.
