The Dark Hollow Band is more of a confederacy than a fixed lineup—more than a dozen musicians are credited on Real Monsters Look Like Men, the group’s latest CD. That adds up to a full sound to flesh out Randall Wilkerson’s songs, with electric guitar and drums punching things up into bluesy rock ’n’ roll ("Nothin’ But Lies") and dobro and banjo adding a jaunty string-band vibe (“Saturday Night”). It’s a downhome record, with Wilkerson’s songwriting and voice, graveled like John Prine’s, taking precedence over flash or polished production.
