Knoxville’s great obstruction—the chunk of Interstate 40 northeast of downtown that’s been closed for a year—will finally be de-obstructed this week. And, fittingly, there will be some fanfare. The most novel event relevant to the reopening is the I-40 Fast Dash/Fun Walk on June 11. For a modest admission price, you can either take part in the Dash, a footrace covering a mile of the freeway or, for a smaller admission price, you can just walk around on it. Then, on June 12, dignitaries including Mayor Bill Haslam, Gov. Phil Bredesen, and Sen. Lamar Alexander are expected to mark the official reopening with a short ceremony followed by a procession of motorists beginning with representatives from Volkswagen, GM, and Nissan.
Fast Dash/Fun Walk participants meet at the Knoxville Civic Coliseum, 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on June 11. Admission is $20 for the race, $10 for the walk.
Opening Ceremony commences on June 12 at 2 p.m. on Interstate 40. Vehicle procession is at 2:30 p.m.
