Jefferson County Mayor Alan Palmeri had a press conference last week to tell New Market residents not to panic, that the proposed Norfolk Southern inter-modal facility is not a done deal for the area. This occurred the week the railroad delivered packets to property owners to secure options and locals learned that at least one large property owner has agreed to sell.
The 1,300 acre site is to include an industrial park and a rail yard to load trailers onto trains for transport cross-country. It has been described to the locals as the largest facility of its kind east of the Mississippi River. Property owners have written the state’s Congressional delegation urging that an existing industrial site in Jefferson City, at the old Magnavox facility, the John Sevier Yards off Rutledge Pike, the Eastbridge Industrial Park in Knox County, or some other “brownfield” be used instead of green pastureland.
