Robert Lovett's 'Keep on Workin’' Adds Up to Hardcore Country

Robert Lovett mixes and matches folk, blues, and bluegrass on his second solo album. The range of influences reflects Lovett’s background—he grew up in Texas, spent a few years in Nashville, and settled in Knoxville not too long ago—but it all adds up to deep hardcore country. Lovett gets help on Keep on Workin’ from Matt Mauch, Aaron Till, Justin Clark, and a host of other acoustic players who add top-notch performances to Lovett’s own ace songwriting. The secret ingredient is Lovett’s voice, a rich baritone that slides from traditional bluegrass (with an emphasis on “blue,” thanks to Lovett’s Texas childhood) to straight country and old-fashioned unreconstructed folk.
