Carter County Asks for Reinstatement of Kent Williams to GOP

The Carter County Commission and the Carter County Republican Party have passed an identical resolution and sent it to the state Republican Party urging that House Speaker Kent Williams, who represents Carter County, be reinstated in the party for the upcoming legislative primary.

Williams was thrown out of the party and denied the right to appear on the Republican primary ballot for re-election after he joined with Democrats to vote himself Speaker of the House last session.

The resolution says party chair Robin Smith did not consider the rights of Carter County voters in making the decision and that it should be up to Carter County voters if Williams is to be re-elected as a Republican representative.

The state Republican executive committee met Saturday but the issue of reinstating Williams into the Republican Party was not on the agenda and was not discussed.
