Coal-mining advocates in Kentucky and West Virginia responded to Sen. Lamar Alexander’s proposed Appalachia Restoration Act by calling on miners to boycott Tennessee destinations this vacation season. Alexander’s bill would prohibit mountaintop-removal coal mining. The miners—now at the beach, one presumes—claim a greater impact on places like Dollywood than Dollywood acknowledges. Sierra Club officials in Kentucky have urged solidarity with Tennesseans, recommending Tennessee as a vacation spot for all SC members, who number nearly a million. (The added attraction of minerless theme parks is not explicit.) Last week, the Natural Resources Defense Council chimed in and recommended that its 1.2 million members rally around the water park, somewhere in Tennessee.
