Best Coffeehouse Runners-Up: Blackbird Coffeehouse, Coffee & Chocolate, The Golden Roast
Knoxville’s oldest coffee house of the coffee-house era was the runaway winner in this category, as it has more than once before. It has gone through several ownerships over the years, but somehow has kept the same atmosphere, with the big Renoir mural on the wall, and the same groovy vibe, disarming to hipsters and hipster wannabes alike. Lately, they’ve offered fresh food, surprisingly good by coffee-shop standards—try the BLT or the vegetarian chili. Knoxville had a Java long before we had a Starbucks, and for many of us it delivered our first experience with espressos, cappuccinos, and lattes. Those drinks have become more common than iced tea, available even in some filling stations, but we still think Java does it best.
