Best Coffeehouse Runners-Up: Blackbird Coffeehouse, Coffee & Chocolate, The Golden Roast
Knoxville’s oldest coffee house of the coffee-house era was the runaway winner in this category, as it has more than once before. It has gone through several ownerships over the years, but somehow has kept the same atmosphere, with the big Renoir mural on the wall, and the same groovy vibe, disarming to hipsters and hipster wannabes alike. Lately, they’ve offered fresh food, surprisingly good by coffee-shop standards—try the BLT or the vegetarian chili. Knoxville had a Java long before we had a Starbucks, and for many of us it delivered our first experience with espressos, cappuccinos, and lattes. Those drinks have become more common than iced tea, available even in some filling stations, but we still think Java does it best.

You mean it's the only coffee shop in town worth mentioning. It isn't such a big accomplishment where there's no one to compete with. This is way cool and all, but the latte's have gotten crappier throughout the years. Maybe you should focus more on the coffee and less on the nicknacks, crappy paint and silly artwork.

Hmm.
coffeejunkee, when's the last time you were at Java? I make it a near daily trip to get hot or iced (their iced, by the way, is done by way of the Japanese method: making a hot, concentrated extraction over ice, which captures the essense of the bean and cools it quickly, rather than letting the brew get bitter by cooling to room temperature over time. I know this because the baristas and owners take the time to educate me and other customers).
They have painted over the mural. They are about to install a new espresso machine and carry Counter Culture beans.
Perhaps it's time you made another trip ...
