There’s a story running through Dark Secret: a small-town murder mystery about repressed rage, dirty journalism, and redemption. The best songs are straight-ahead blues-based rockers (“Memory of You,” “Nothing Else Matters”) that stand on their own but also push the narrative forward. Early passages are bogged down with exposition that comes off a little like Bat Out of Hell outtakes, but the local all-star performances by Tim Lee, Susan Bauer Lee, and Don Coffey Jr. lend a rough-hewn professionalism to the disc and make up for the plot-heavy beginning. Grace Kennedy and Acme James trade effective vocals as the over-ambitious reporter and the man who’s trying to get her to come clean.
