John T. Baker has quietly evolved into one of Knoxville’s most innovative and accomplished bedroom pop artists. It’s not a big field, but that shouldn’t take away from the Econopop and French Broads frontman’s increasingly ambitious recordings. Rainbrella depends on contributions from a handful of local musicians—Ed Richardson, Eric Nowinski, Will Leggett, and Doug Campbell—and an iPod’s worth of samples, but it’s the product of a singular vision. Baker mixes brief electronic collages with gorgeous guitar pop—”The Impossible Girl” is among the prettiest songs he’s ever written—all centered around “Eno-Byrne,” a funky four-minute remix of “A Secret Life” from Brian Eno and David Byrne’s My Life in the Bush of Ghosts.
