Custom made for you: The new CD by Christabel and the Jons would sound at home in an old phonograph or in a juke join with swing dancers.
Christa DeCicco and her band—drummer Jon Whitlock, bassist Mischa Goldman, and multi-instrumentalist Seth Hopper—expand on the swinging folk of 2006’s Love and Circumstances on this collection that incorporates everything from string jazz (“Boy Crazy”) to bluegrass (“Say I’m Crazy”) and honky tonk (“More Than Friends”). DeCicco’s phrasing is effortless—she barely seems to be singing, even as she slides from sultry to coy. The band sounds equally relaxed, shifting gears, tempos, and genres with an understated virtuosity. There’s even a version of Monty Python’s “The Galaxy Song.”
