The Avett Brothers, Emotionalism (Ramseur Records, 2007)

The instrumentation and vocal melodies on this album are what really make it a unique listen. The album ranges from rock to folk, but in my mind it is exactly what Appalachian/Americana music should sound like. The sad thing is that no matter how good one of their albums is, it doesn’t even come close to how good they are live.

Langhorne Slim and the War Eagles, Langhorne Slim (Kemado, 2008)

Langhorne Slim’s vocal style is what makes his sound stand out. Similarly to Joe Strummer, Billy Bragg, or Bob Dylan, you either hate his vocals or love them. In our opinion, that is what makes this album worth a listen and then some.

Steve Earle, Transcendental Blues (E-Squared, 2000)

Terrific album. “Steve’s Last Ramble” and “The Galway Girl” are songs that suit you no matter what mood you are in. “Lonelier Than This” is a beautifully heartbreaking song.

The Hold Steady, Stay Positive (Vagrant, 2008)

Nothing fancy, just straight forward rock ’n’ roll as it should be. “Sequestered in Memphis” and “Constructed Summer” are two great tracks.

Ryan Adams and the Cardinals, Jacksonville City Nights (Lost Highway, 2005)

This album almost has the feel of a classic country record. “The Hardest Part,” “A Kiss Before I Go,” and “The End” are favorites on this album.
