Former Swami John Tilson leads his latest endeavor, the dryly witty duo Vacationist League, through a semi-jazzy acoustic set at the Bistro on this live disc, a promo for the band’s upcoming full-length, Bypassin’ the Barroom. Tilson’s songs vary from nostalgic laments (“The Old-Time Hardware Store”) to lyrical odes to geometric figures (“Quadrilaterals”), with plenty more jokes in between. Tilson’s trademark sense of humor is evident throughout—as is Brandon Beavers’ stirring cello—but Tilson never lets a gag get in the way of either a bracing pop melody or an emotional insight.
