Local CD Review

The album is such a resounding success for two reasons; Harrison's deft songwriting skills and The High Score 's rock-solid musical underpinning. Mr. Harrison & Co. have cohered into a singular unit, delivering beer-soaked, hickory-smoked slabs of country rock sure to satisfy rock'n'rollers, hardcore country fans, and even you.

Following in the grand tradition of AC/DC and The Ramones, , Harrison has filtered his rock down to its core elements. The songs are stripped to the bone and hammered down with military precision. This is not to say that Push Me On Home lacks musical variation, it's just that Harrison has realized his ample strengths and eliminated all distractions.   There's not a second of filler.

The lyrics are peopled by the usual suspects: a rogue's gallery of town drunks, wild women, Mama and Daddy, Jesus, and Satan. But there's nothing hackneyed about Mic's musical storytelling. It takes a hell of a man to draw from this traditional metaphoric palate--and with a long career of dues-paying and barroom philosophizing, Harrison is by golly qualified. Listen in awe, but don't try this at home.

Mic Harrison & The High Score will celebrate the album's release this Friday, Feb. 16, at The Corner Lounge. Cincinnati's The Stapletons open.

Friday, Feb. 16: As if there is anything more inspiring than a Bon Jovi tribute band! Get out the Aqua Net and Dippity Do, ladies and gents, because Slippery When Wet is bringing big hair back at Blue Cats.

Saturday, Feb. 17: We saw this "inspirational" poster that says: "Beer Goggles: Still a good excuse." We're inclined to agree. So throw down a few Irish Carbombs (Guiness with a shot in it) and go see Matt Stillwell at Patrick Sullivan's. You know you want to. And you can always blame the beer.

Sunday, Feb. 18: What do you think Stephanie was thinking about when she named her band Stephanie's Id ? Is there even a Stephanie in the band, and if so, do they actually sing about the baser aspects of her psyche? So many questions, World Grotto. So many questions.

Monday, Feb. 19: Beside the rivering waters of. Hitherandthithering waters of. Night!

Tuesday, Feb. 20: We don't know for sure, but we'd bet half of you don't know where the Pilot Light is. If you care anything at all about street cred, go check out Ladyfinger and Senryu , and don't order anything at the bar except Schlitz.

Wednesday, Feb. 21: Anyone who actually takes that advice about Schlitz is a complete sucker. Anyway, in the spirit of Keep It Simple, Stupid, Yonder Mountain String Band will be playing two shows today: WDVX at noon and the Bijou Theatre at 9 p.m. No excuses this time.
