Debate Debatable

The format would have had Hall and Ragsdale being quizzed by a panel of journalists with two-minute responses and 30-second rebuttals but without telephone calls from listeners. Hall objected because he said he had agreed to appear with Ragsdale with host Dave Foulk and take calls from listeners.

WIVK is trying to work out a new format and re-schedule the debate. The station had decided not to include listener calls because sometimes candidates have supporters hog the phone lines and serve up softball questions or make personal attacks on an opponent.

Let’s Clear the Air

He asked County Mayor Mike Ragsdale to convene a meeting this week with mayors from surrounding counties for some candid conversation about air quality. It included county mayors that have to deal with draconian pollution control measures that may result from the continued decline in air quality in the region.

Alexander thinks TVA ought to be doing more to reduce air pollution by its coal-fired generating plants, while TVA Chair Bill Baxter points to a years-long process under which the agency upgrades the plants on a piecemeal basis.

The new nine-member part-time board for TVA is stacked with Baxter friends. Alexander appears to be taking his case to the public and enlisting the support of East Tennessee elected officials to force the agency to do more.

GOPs Find Candidate

The Bredesen Campaign has announced 37 state Republicans who will serve on the 2006 Republicans for Bredesen coalition.

Local Republicans that have signed up include Cathy Ackerman , Pete Claussen , Gordon Fee , David Moon , Howard Phillips , Steve South and Mark Williamson . Other names of note are John “Thunder” Thornton , a UT trustee, and Marguerite Sallee , who served in Gov. Lamar Alexander’s cabinet.

The Bredesen campaign says more Republicans will be added to the list as the campaign progresses.

Green with Envy

Unnamed Hibernian insurgents had dyed the water in this park named for a once-famous German family. Preliminary indications were that it didn’t seem to be toxic, and on Friday city officials just shook their heads and decided to “roll with it.”  However, on Monday, a maintenance crew drained the pool, replacing it with standard, clear, Protestant water.

That Third Candidate

Observers are beginning to wonder if the squabbling might not be benefiting the third candidate in the race, James McMillan . McMillan, a farmer who got interested in politics because of water run-off issues related to North Knox County development, is getting around and being favorably received.

Comeback Kids?

Leo Cooper , a former chair of the Knox County Commission, has come back to run against his successor, current Knox County Commission Chair Scott Moore .

Jim McLain , a long-time school board member, has come back to run against his successor, incumbent school board member Robert Bratton .

Moore and Bratton are young men who spend a lot of time campaigning and working hard. McLain and Cooper are elder statesmen who appear to be relying on past service and name recognition to return them to office.

It will be interesting to see which the voters prefer.

Al’s Swan Song

The other candidate in the race is Jimmy Dunn, who has had the misfortune of being the chief prosecutor in Cocke County for Schmutzer’s office, a county lately revealed by the FBI to be rampant with gambling and public corruption.
