Training Center

We understand, however, the real problem with the early voting location at Democratic County Clerk Mike Padgett ’s mall location had to do with the training center. Evidently the training involved teaching potential voters how to use the new voting machines to spell out A-M-Y B-R-O-Y-L-E-S.

Amy Broyles is the write-in candidate against Democratic Commissioner Billy Tindell . Jim Gray , who resigned as Democratic Party Chair rather than support the term-limited Tindell, has an office in the clerk’s space at Knoxville Center.

Padgett and mall owner Simon Properties were caught in the middle and mall management tried to pull the plug on the early voting location. Simon, concerned about setting a precedent allowing people to pass out flyers inside the mall, sent Padgett a letter saying a polling place in the facility is “outside the scope” of the county’s lease. The Knox County Election Commission has continued to operate the early voting site for this election and will deal with the issue before the next election.

Looking straight into the C-Span camera Davis said the Gay Marriage amendment didn’t go far enough to protect the institution of marriage. Davis then proposed that the amendment also outlaw divorce and make adultery illegal. He also said people who have been divorced or have committed adultery should be prohibited from running for political office.

No one could get an accurate count on how many of his House colleagues would fall under the adultery provision, though one press report said there are about 30 members of the House who have been divorced.

After Jay Leno ’s Tonight Show , several blogs and newspapers back in his district took his words at face value for a couple of days. Davis’ office finally put out a statement saying the congressman was not being serious, but rather was being sarcastic in order to point out the partisan nature of the Republican effort to pass a Gay Marriage prohibition.

Davis voted for the Gay Marriage prohibition.

With Ward’s usual mordant wit, however, he invited everyone to the “Bankruptcy Dinner.”

The American Civil Liberties Union has filed a federal lawsuit challenging a Missouri statute banning such demonstrations at funerals on behalf of Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church, which he heads. The ACLU contends the free speech rights of the protesters are being violated.

Tennessee’s law, passed after a demonstration at a service member’s funeral in Smyrna, does not ban demonstrations, but requires that they be at least 1,000 feet away from the service. The attorney general’s office said the provision might pass constitutional muster where an outright ban, which was first proposed, would be suspect.

The last chair is supposed to be filled by a candidate from Memphis and reportedly is to be the board’s first African American.

But time drags on and the nomination has yet to be made. Majority Leader Bill Frist told a Knoxville gathering Saturday he doesn’t know when the last appointment will be made. “I know they are doing background checks and looking at all that now,” Frist told the Associated Press.

Nominees are subject to an extensive FBI background check. The delay creates the appearance that it takes much longer to check the background of an African-American candidate from Memphis than white candidates from Middle and East Tennessee. The delay is beginning to smell.
