Another Day in the Life of Mitch Rutman

With Bells On

Wilco’s played here at least three other times that we know of, in support of A.M ., Being There and then Summerteeth , though on that last tour, circa ’99, an eyewitness reports that Tweedy got upset by a poor turnout at the Tennessee Theatre and vowed to never return to Knoxville. After some wound-licking and—ahem—rehabilitation, he’s willing to give our shabby town another go round. Tickets go on sale Friday morning.

Also, we’ve picked up on some very unsubstantiated rumors about Bonnaroo headliners, albeit from a number of people. What we’ve heard is Radiohead , Beck and Tom Petty , and if what we’ve heard is true, then picture us with rainbows, hearts and kittens bubbling from our open, grinning mouths.

Cool Mom, Hot Shows

“It all started when I went to see an American Plague show and I was so amazed. So I started helping them out with promotions, and eventually they told me I should take it a little further.” Thus, KSC was born about four months ago. Williamson started a website and was soon helping other bands promote themselves, as well as organizing the weekly all-ages shows on Sundays at Corner Lounge, which have been growing steadily.

This weekend, Williamson has worked with the Corner Lounge to bring 16 local bands together for a three-day fundraiser with proceeds going to the Salvation Army. “They’ve helped my family out when we were down on our luck, and they were just so nice,” says Williamson. “At that moment I decided I wanted to help them one day.” Proceeds from the $8 ticket sales plus KSC pins, t-shirts and compilation discs will go toward rebuilding the old Salvation Army building on Broadway that burned down last year.

Thursday’s bands are mostly emo; Jeremy Café , AlmostEven , The Aftermath and My Lost Cause . On Friday, Muleface , Serene Scream , Pick Up the Snake and American Plague will bring the Southern-fried alt rock. Saturday night is for the metalheads out there, with Awake the Suffering , Psychotic Behavior , Know Lyfe and Straight Line Stitch . Finally on Sunday, the all-ages show begins at 5:30 p.m. and features Nic Tiddler , The Cosmic Egg , Opaque and Till Hope Comes in Flames .

So, do Williamson’s kids think their mom rocks? “Well, yeah, they do now,” she laughs. “Their friends will be like, ‘Your mom’s cool.’” And not because she buys Sunny D.

Another Day in the Life of Mitch Rutman

Anyhow, Rutman recently resurfaced with the final product in hand: an unassumingly brilliant self-titled EP that goes down like PBR and hits you like Bourbon Street. It’s jazz-fusion at its finest; layers of mixed instrumentation (Coffin chips in on the tenor and soprano saxophones, flute and alto flute and bass clarinet) overlaid by a trickier-than-thou guitar part that, in Rutman tradition, sounds utterly effortless. And not only can Rutman hang with the best of them in the jazz world at large, he’s a magnet for the talent that lurks here in our own fair city, namely, keyboardist Ben Maney , bassist Vine Ilagan , drummer Chad Melton and percussionist Jon Whitlock , who comprise the “Group.” Catch the lot of them live on Thursday, Jan. 26, at Preservation Pub when they open for the Whisky Scars .
