Before Daltry Calhoun opened in select cities Sept. 23, BMT attended the film’s premiere at Mann’s Chinese Theater in Hollywood. The trip was a first for another reason as well, Michol says. “Ricky has never flown on anything but a Huey helicopter during maneuvers at Ft. Campbell with the 101st Air Cavalry back when he was in college,” she says. “Like our drummer’s wife said, it’s very cool that flying to Hollywood to represent our songs during the premiere of a film that has our music in it is a fantastic and special reason to make a first flight.”
The movie, which has received mixed reviews, is expected to screen in Knoxville sometime in October.

Or, more recently, all the weekends he’s been spending in Nashville with Bela Fleck & the Flecktones ’ saxophonist Jeff Coffin , recording the Mitch Rutman Group’s debut CD. The cloud-wrapped story goes that Coffin tracked Rutman down after some roughshod MRG recordings mysteriously wound up in his stereo. Having decided that Rutman’s not-yet-hatched debut was a golden egg worth sitting on, Coffin volunteered not only to produce and arrange the album but to play on it as well—highlights include a co-written duet. In addition, Coffin enlisted a couple of his buddies from the Jeff Coffin Mu’tet , Felix Pastorius and Derico Watson , to lend their talents.
