Viaductwork Looms

The on-street parking on the viaduct is used primarily by residents of the 100 block of Gay Street. The Emporium building is at the corner of Gay Street and Jackson Avenue.

Starbucks Nation

There are now eight Starbucks locations in Knoxville, with another two in Sevierville and one in Oak Ridge. Roderick says he’s not at liberty to discuss further openings, but Starbucks employees in the downtown Hilton hinted that Seattle’s Best will be served soon in the S. Gay Street location formerly occupied by Tortilla Mac’s. Starbucks bought out Seattle’s Best two years ago.

TVA List, Sort of

The latest list we’ve seen of potential nominees who are FOBs (Friends of Baxter) are Susan Williams and Bill Sansom of Knoxville, Scott Niswonger of Greeneville, Howard Thrailkill ofAlabama, Dennis Bratliff of Nashville and a couple of people known only to us as Mann and DePriest . (It’s hard to take good notes crouched down behind the copy machine.)

Haney MLB Owner?

The Washington Post Style section reports that Haney attended a black-tie fund-raiser for the baseball team’s charitable foundation last week and, in order to build goodwill, offered up to $600,000 to match any other contributions to the team’s community chest.

No Victor Fingerprints

Former Mayor Victor Ashe , who stealthily engineered such a campaign against one of his Council opponents, Hoyle McNeil , years ago, says he doesn’t know Charles “Buddy” Mulkey , who got 31 write-in votes against Councilman Joe Hultquist. Hultquist was not one of the former mayor’s favorite Council members, but Ashe pooh-poohs the idea that he would get involved in such a fracas.

Mulkey was advised by Gary Underwood , the Ashe protégé and former councilman who won after such a write-in effort, and attorney Arthur Seymour Jr. , a close friend of the former mayor, giving rise to speculation Ashe might have been involved.

Mulkey’s name will not be on the ballot, since write-in candidates these days have to give the Election Commission 20 days notice before a spontaneous eruption of voters can occur.
