Live Review
And that’s just how you feel after listening to one of The Glass’s albums (having not yet heard their new one, Hibernation , we recommend their 2003 Makeshift release Concorde ). The band’s live performances, as reconfirmed by a Preservation Pub performance last Saturday night, are even more intense—slow-boiling cascades of emotion interrupted by crashing fits of scalding nostalgia. As always, Brad Bailey led the way, looking for all the world like somebody had just ripped the heart out of his chest to use as a hockey puck on the almost ice-skating rink outside. “I’m a minor poet/ You’re a finer breed,” he sang, eyes closed, swaying imperceptibly in the warm scarlet light. Throughout the pub, ice cubes melted faster in their tumblers. Barflies slid lower in their seats. One man got up to dance.

We’ve lost two such friends and co-workers in recent weeks. For the younger ones among us, it’s kind of like sacrificing Mom and Dad: but it was our snarky, sweet-hearted Mike Gibson and our enthusiastic, bipolar Paige M. Travis . Now we’re racing around like teenagers with their parents out of town. Only, we’ve got to pay the bills and we must mind the housekeeping in their absence. The biggest bummer, though, is that we’re starting to miss them. We’re reminded each time we pass by their barren desks and overhear their unanswered phones. But, every once in a while, when we’re feeling silly and sad, we’ll troll through the Metro Pulse archives and look for them, and we’ll be ever encouraged by their colorful legacies.
By the way, we know the suspense has been killing you all this time. The “M” stands for Meredith.
