Steps to Nowhere

A tale of two empty lots

After what was described as the biggest funeral crowd in Southern history, Sen.Taylor was buried in the Taylor plot at Old Gray, alongside his first wife and a small daughter who had died years earlier. Mourners erected a large marble shaft on his grave, inscribed with some of his florid quotations expressing humility; in 1927, there was a vigorous effort to erect a second Knoxville memorial to Taylor on the courthouse lawn.
