Letter: Popularity Contest

I thoroughly enjoyed Jack Neely's article covering how Tennessee's political leanings have changed over the years. ["Red-State Blues," cover story, March 1, 2012]

What I'd really like to know is why we must continue to put up with the so-called "electoral college." Because of the electoral college, my vote for president has not counted in many, many years. Why can we not elect a president by popular vote?
