Letter: Careful What You Post

The elk that was seen around the world via social and mainstream media has been euthanized by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency because it was getting too close to people. Even though the video shows the elk did not harm the photographer, its proximity sealed its fate because the agency responsible has an extreme policy regarding familiarity and fraternization. Since these elk are accustomed to humans traversing their shared space, the logic of the policy should be questioned by politicians overseeing the agency. The overreaction by the TWRA gives cause to pause and reconsider reporting, recording, or sharing encounters of harmless interaction so that the wildlife will be here to enjoy tomorrow.
