As anyone who has attended First Friday receptions in downtown Knoxville knows, the visual arts are alive and well in our city. I look forward to a day in the near future when the 100 Block [of Gay Street] is closed to only pedestrian traffic for these monthly occasions. This would encourage more street performers and performance artists to invigorate the events. I encourage friends and colleagues who are planning to visit our city to time their trips with this monthly visual feast. Additionally, I am grateful that Metro Pulse has continued to devote space to critical assessment of the visual arts on a regular basis. Not all independent weekly papers in other cities share this commitment, and we are lucky to have Heather Joyner Spica offering her assessment of exhibits by local, national, and international artists.
